At the time it seemed like the end of an era. Inaugurating what turned out to be one of the longest farewells in show business, Garrison Keillor's first Final Performance of A Prairie Home Companion was broadcast from the World Theater in the summer of 1987. And though it ultimately proved to be the start of an annual tradition, before the show returned to regular production five years later, this episode of APHC has a truly elegiac, bon voyage, "what happens next?" sort of mood. Chet Atkins, Jean Redpath, Leo Kottke, Vern Sutton, and Kate MacKenzie join in the musically rich program, with poetry by Roy Blount Jr., radio drama with Buster the Show Dog, and the News from Lake Wobegon.
