This charming piece centers on a pair of newlyweds in 18th-century Paris who are grappling with the intricacies of sex. "There is more real music in this little score than in many a big operatic work," Ravel once proclaimed of the one-act operetta, which was beefed up with additional music by Darius Milhaud. The role of the young Parisian gentleman, Gontran, was conceived as a trouser role (for soprano) but is performed here most convincingly by tenor Franck Cassard.
