When Duke Ellington met Queen Elizabeth at a private audience in 1957, he was inspired to write The Queen’s Suite. Only one disc was made, for her, and the piece was never heard in public until this performance of January 1989. The acclaim was instantaneous: one Ellington biographer said the piano interlude titled “Single Petal of a Rose,” was “fit to be placed with the best of Chopin and Debussy.” The band also plays “Black and Tan Fantasy,” “Stompy Jones,” “The Mooch,” “Mood Indigo,” “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue,” and more.
