"There are many kinds of classical music" says Yo-Yo Ma. "What I think is a more fluid way of describing it is that sometimes it is an oral tradition, root-based music. Some of it is improvised, some written down. It can be a combination of all those things." The ancient Silk Road wended its way from China to the Middle East, with musicians from both West and East traveling back and forth. We journey back in time as well, with selections like "Mongolian Traditional Long Song," the Italian Renaissance composition "Chi Passa Per'sta Strada," the traditional Chinese song "Blue Little Flower" (on while Ma's cello is seconded by the sheng, an ancient form of mouth organ), five folk songs from the repertoire of the nomadic Saami people of Finland, and much more.
