Danish poet and novelist Hans Christian Andersen (1805–75) is best known for his tragic fairy tales; in them his sense of fantasy, descriptive power, and acute sensitivity immortalized his work. At the same time, autobiography was an obsession for Andersen; at the age of 25 he embarked on a trip and left instructions for the publication of his first autobiographical sketch should he fail to return alive. In 1855 he wrote his first official autobiography, continuing his life story in 1863 and this self-portrait—by turns vain and humble, bitter and celebratory—offers ample evidence of his gifts as a storyteller. Here he depicts the poverty of his provincial childhood, his wide travels, his friendships and lively encounters with Kierkegaard, Dickens, Hugo, the Brothers Grimm, Balzac, and Liszt, and the international celebrity of his later years. "Read this autobiography," writes Naomi Lewis in her introduction, "and you will know something of the thorn forest Andersen traversed, the prize he sought, and the price he paid for obtaining that prize."
