This is a concise history of the Freikorps, the voluntary paramilitary groups that manipulated German politics from the abdication of the Kaiser in 1918 to Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch (coup d'état) of 1923. Raised in the aftermath of World War I, the Freikorps were composed of veteran soldiers, embittered and out of place in postwar Germany, and right-wing students determined to crush those who had "betrayed" their homeland. Nigel Jones chronicles the plots and assassinations the Freikorps participated in; their crushing of a communist uprising in Germany; and how the Nazis adopted their ideology almost whole, then murdered many of the Freikorps' members when Hitler came to power.
