This sumptuously illustrated book offers a close look at the pair of magnificent picture-scrolls entitled Chogonka gakan—Song of Everlasting Sorrow—held in the Japanese collection of Dublin's Chester Beatty Library. Created by the Kyoto Kano School master Sansetsu (1590–1651) in the early Edo period of Japan, the painting depicts the tragic Chinese love story of the Tang emperor Minghuang and his beloved concubine Yang Guifei, as told by poet Bai Juyi in 806. Yang Guifei was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China and the consort of Minghuang. She was ultimately killed during the An Lushan Rebellion as the emperor fled the capital—a reprisal from the guards who blamed the rebellion on Yang Guifei's powerful family. This Chinese subject has held a place in Japanese culture ever since it was first mentioned in the Tale of Genji, and this catalog demonstrates how the Chogonka scrolls emerged from Sansetsu's long engagement with Chinese themes.
