Pablo Casals called Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129, "one of the finest works one could wish to hear—sublime music from beginning to end." Its richness and subtlety are beautifully delineated in the playing of Ma and Ax (both of whom eschew flashy virtuosity). The Concerto's first two movements are meditative ("exactly those qualities of the beloved enthusiastic dreamer whom we know as Schumann," in the words of musicologist Sir Donald Tovey), and the finale is fittingly euphoric. This remastered edition includes Fantasiestücke (3 Fantasy Pieces), Op. 73; Adagio and Allegro Op. 70; and Fünf Stücke im Volkston for cello (or violin) and piano, Op. 102.
