Originally published in 1984, this superb setting of E.T.A. Hoffmann's story of Christmas magic and revenge, of bloodthirsty villainy and unstinting loyalty, is based on the 1981 stage production of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker by the Pacific Northwest Ballet. Artistic director Kent Stowell sought Maurice Sendak to create the costumes and staging, and the pair went back to Hoffmann's original tale to restore much of the dramatic weight and romance that had been lost in previous stagings. This edition is overflowing with the late artist's illustrations, including a number of two-page tableaus, and boasts a delicious translation by Ralph Manheim that captures the nervous energy and the clarity of Hoffmann's narrative.
