Two Danish Romantic composers are featured: Niels Gade with Five Songs, Op. 13, O du, der du die Liebe, and Gebeth; and Johan Peter E. Hartmann with Ten Religious and Folk Poems, Op. 86, and Ride Softly Through the Grove. Gade was 19th-century Denmark's most famous composer. Influenced by the Schumanns and Felix Mendelssohn, he took over as the conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig after Mendelssohn died in 1847. The other Danish master, Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (1805–1900), wrote numerous instrumental works (many of them recorded) as well as four operas.
