Music for piano had a central role in the work of composer/pianist Bentzon (1919–2000), which blends structure and a feeling of improvisation in the best tradition of keyboard virtuosity. He championed the music of Arnold Schoenberg in Denmark in a period when the Carl Nielsen tradition was dominant. In addition to his own Toccata, Op. 10, Third Sonata, Op. 44, Partita, Op. 38, and Stravinskian Chamber Concerto, Op. 52, he performs Schoenberg's Suite for Piano, Op. 25, and Six Little Pieces for Piano, Op. 19. "His music is distinctive, and these pieces have the newspaper-like grit of war and its effects as it surrounded him. The Third Sonata, Op. 44, is a particularly ambitious piece and should come as a welcome surprise to pianists who are on the lookout for good, neglected 20th-century literature to play."—All Music Guide
