A bout of hepatitis and clashes with the show's producers and costar Martin Milner led to George Maharis's departure halfway through Season Three. These 16 episodes from the last half of the season include Maharis's final appearance, a number of solo episodes with Milner, and the introduction of a new sidekick. Robert Duvall and Burt Reynolds were considered for the role, but the producers ultimately cast Glenn Corbett as Lincoln Case, a moody Army Ranger recently returned from the Vietnam "conflict" (not yet a war and still nearly invisible to most Americans). The season's final episode, "Soda Pop and Paper Flags," features Alan Alda in surgical garb, a decade before his portrayal of Dr. "Hawkeye" Pierce on M*A*S*H. Yale-educated Tod Stiles (Martin Milner) and Hell's Kitchen-bred Buz Murdoch (George Maharis) prove that the journey is more important than the destination as they crisscross America in search of themselves and helping others find purpose in their lives. The original road-trip drama, each episode featured a new location, intriguing characters, compassionate stories, top-drawer writing by Oscar winner Sterling Silliphant, a catchy theme song by Nelson Riddle, a classic car (1960 powder-blue Corvette), and one of the most impressive inventories of guest stars to ever grace a TV series.
