The cofounder of RAW comics (with her husband Art Spiegelman), the longtime art editor for The New Yorker, and the publisher and editorial director for the TOON Books imprint for children, French-American artist and publisher Françoise Mouly was awarded France's Legion of Honor in 2011. "When I started RAW magazine in the '80s, there were mostly superheroes, a few children's comics, and the dirty, intentionally lowbrow, underground comix. And now, comics can tackle any topic," she writes in her introduction, reflecting the influence she herself has had on the industry. Here she presents 29 excerpts from such writers and artists as Charles Burns, Chester Brown, Joyce Farmer, Chris Ware, Gary Panter, Sergio Aragonés, Christoph Niemann, Adrian Tomine, and Sarah Varon. And in keeping with her recent work, Mouly includes an additional sampling of a half-dozen comics for children. Since its inception in 1915, the Best American series has become the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction and nonfiction. For this title, as for each of the others, a series editor reviews hundreds of periodicals, then selects between 50 and 100 outstanding works. The guest editor—a recognized expert in the field—then pares the list down to the 20 or so very best pieces.
