Description
This first book in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy introduces Frodo Baggins, a gentle hobbit who has inherited the magic ring—the One Ring—found by his uncle Bilbo, hero of The Hobbit (which is soon to be realized in its own series of films by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson). But with the Ring comes a perilous quest: Frodo must leave his peaceful life and sojourn to the blasted land of Mordor to destroy the Ring, which is filled with the evil power of the Dark Lord Sauron. In this tale of heroic deeds and high adventure, Frodo is joined by his best friends Merry, Pippin, and Samwise; by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, who comes and goes without explanation; by the Elven prince Legolas and the Dwarf warrior Gimli; by Boromir, the famed Captain of Gondor; and by Aragorn, the ranger who saved Frodo and his friends from their first encounter with Sauron's Dark Riders. The three volumes of Tolien's masterpiece, originally published in the 1950s, form a single saga of Middle-earth, hailed by the New York Times Book Review as "a unique, wholly realized other world, evoked from deep in the well of time, massively detailed, absorbingly entertaining, profound in meaning." This trade paperback edition features a foil-stamped cover image taken from Tolkien's own drawings.
