One of the earliest scientific depictions of marine fauna comes from Samuel Fallours, who was in the service of the Dutch East India Company when he made vivid watercolor drawings of fish and other marine organisms around the Indian Ocean island of Ambon. The beautiful and elaborately detailed pictures he brought back to Holland in 1712 are as much art as document, providing an extraordinary description of the tropical fish of the East Indies that can still be interpreted in light of present-day scientific knowledge. This oversized volume is a photographic facsimile edition of Fallours's Poissons tropicaux des Indes orientales, reproducing more than 400 drawings—including water insects, crustaceans, and a mermaid—with the original handwritten French captions. An enclosed booklet provides translations in English and German and a tri-lingual history of Fallours and his illustrations.
