In 1918 Ernest Hemingway failed the vision test to qualify as a soldier, so he instead volunteered for ambulance service on the Italian front, where he was wounded and twice decorated. Recuperating in Milan, he fell in love with an American nurse, and his experiences became the basis for this novel, which Vita Sackville-West called "a most beautiful, moving and human book." The Nobel Prize–winning author famously said that he rewrote the ending 39 times to get the words right; this edition collects all the alternate endings, Hemingway's own introduction to an illustrated 1948 reissue of the novel, a personal foreword by the author's son Patrick, and a new introduction by the author's grandson Seán.
