The American Jazz Philharmonic was Jack Elliott's baby. Elliott began in Broadway musicals before becoming a musical arranger on Judy Garland's TV show and musical director for Andy Williams. An Academy Award, an Emmy Award, and Kennedy Center Honors shows followed, and in addition, he directed the Grammys' orchestra for many years. Elliott shows a sure hand in leading this massive ensemble (10 woodwinds, 13 brass, 24 strings, harp, piano, three basses, drums, and three percussionists) in John Clayton's "Open Me First," Claus Ogerman's "Symphonic Dances," Manny Albam's "Nostalgico" (featuring altoist Phil Woods), and bassist Ray Brown's "Afterthoughts."
