"What a marvelous session," Penguin Guide writes of this 1963 date. "Burrell sounds at his most seductive on 'I Thought About You,' at his most suavely blue on 'Montono Blues'; but it's his interplay with the imperious Hawkins, in one of his last great periods, that makes the record special." Tommy Flanagan shines in his solo on "Tres Palabras" and Burrell does some hard bop cooking on "I Never Knew"; other tunes include "Out of This World," "Guilty Listen," and "It's Getting Dark." "During his most productive period between 1963 and 1970, Burrell forged a soulful instrumental style that showcased his cool, bluesy phrasing and melodic inventiveness. As the late Tal Farlow once said of Burrell: 'He's unique—I can spot his playing anywhere. His chord conception is wonderful, and you're always aware of the harmonic movement in his work—particularly in his single-string solos."—Guitar Player
