Fellow pianists marveled at Oscar Peterson's stupendous technique, but they were always quick to point out his earthiness as well. "Peterson redefined swing for modern jazz pianists for the latter half of the 20th century," commented Herbie Hancock when Peterson died in 2007. "I was dazzled by the precision of his playing. But it was primarily the groove that moved me about Oscar. The groove and the blues, but with the sophistication that I was used to from classical music." Tunes in this concert from Slovenia, then part of the former Yugoslavia, include "Fly Me to the Moon," Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma," Duke Ellington's "Band Call" and "Satin Doll," and Milt Jackson's "Reunion Blues." "This excellent concert is over two hours long, starting off with a smoking version of 'Reunion Blues' followed by a pretty ballad from Peterson's Canadian Suite, 'Wheatland.' Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen play up to Peterson's usual high standards, complementing one another…. There are many fine songs on this date that aren't featured very often on other live releases by Peterson."—All Music Guide
