The 'Tet in the title of this gorgeous 2009 release by bopper Benny Golson refers to his 1959 sextet, which he called the Jazztet. They recorded two of jazz's most famous songs: Golson's "Killer Joe" and "Whisper Not." Golson revisits the latter here (with guest vocals by Al Jarreau); this mellow and sophisticated set also includes Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy," Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," the ballads "From Dream to Dream" and El DeBarge's "Love Me in a Special Way," and jazz arrangements of pieces by Chopin ("L'adieu") and Verdi. "'Whisper Not' is one of many tunes that have made Golson one of jazz' leading composers. He has displayed an unfailing gift for suave melodies combined with elaborate and sophisticated harmonies, all spiced with rhythms ranging from sultry saunters to high-stepping marches.
