Riffing on "A Great Day in Harlem" (a famous Life magazine photo of jazz musicians), this 2001 concert held at the Apollo Theater was a benefit for the Jazz Musicians' Emergency Fund. Piano great Tommy Flanagan's "Sunset and the Mockingbird" was nominated for a Grammy, but with this caliber of jazz artistry, every track is an odyssey. Special moments: Kenny Barron and violinist Regina Carter's duet on Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain"; Cassandra Wilson's version of Son House's "Death Letter"; Melba Joyce leading the pack on "Every Day I Have the Blues"; guitarist Russell Malone's "We Have a Friend in Jesus"; Ray Bryant's solo piano on Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma." "The first disc features Randy Brecker and Paquito D'Rivera (on clarinet) trading spotlights as Ron Carter's bass swings heavy beneath on 'No Greater Love.' Irving Berlin's 'If I Had You' receives sparkling candlelight treatment by pianist Kenny Barron and soulful songstress Nnenna Freelon, while Ahmad Jamal leads a lively quartet on a peppy run through his own 'Devil's in My Den.'…. 'Fanfare for Four Trumpets' features the splashy harmonic fire of Jimmy Owens, Jon Faddis, Brecker, and Eddie Allen as Dave Gibson keeps time…. 'Wee' is a brass fanatic's delight, with flugelhorn, alto, tenor, and tuba all vying for attention, then trying to find each other over a quick pulse groove; participants include Clark Terry and Phil Woods."—All Music Guide
