German-born photographer John Gutmann (1905–1998) fled the Nazi regime in 1933 and settled in San Francisco, where he began to document his adopted country. His own status as a Jewish immigrant informed his focus on individuals from the Asian–American, African–American, and gay communities, as well as his compassionate photographs of civilians in India, Burma, and China during World War II. Gutmann's photographs and visual art appear here in 130 duotone images, while his long and productive career is chronicled in the book's text.
