Description
Drawing on the strategies of both modern art and engineering, the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) hoped to promote efficient and rational city planning on a worldwide scale. From the 1940s to the 1960s, this collaborative group—whose members included Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Josep Lluís Sert—unveiled a variety of proposals and designs, hoping to persuade politicians and developers to envision a different future for our metropolises. CIAM's failure to persuade the powers-that-be, argues Lewis Mumford, has led to our present state of near-universal urban renewal and unchecked sprawl. This book's 100 illustrations depict cities both real and prospective, as seen in the drawings and models of a prescient cabal of architects and designers whose full significance has only become clearer in recent decades.
