Description
One of the great innovators in the history of art, Paul Cézanne influenced a multitude of artists throughout Europe with his vivid landscapes and still life paintings. On this side of the Atlantic, Cézanne’s paintings had a similarly catalytic effect on emerging artists in the first half of the 20th century. Featuring 150 color illustrations and dozens of black and white photographs by such artists as Paul Strand, Marsden Hartley, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Demuth, Arshile Gorky, Charles Sheeler, and Maurice Prendergast, this exhibition catalog shows how American painters and photographers cemented Cézanne’s legacy, while forging new and distinctly American artistic trends. Supplementary essays discuss American collectors of his work, the shaping of modernism in the American West, as well as the lasting effect of Cézanne's art on Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s.
