Director Tamara Jenkins' original screenplay about the coming of middle age won several critics' awards and was nominated for an Oscar in 2008. Equally astute are the lead performances from Laura Linney (Oscar nomination) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Golden Globe nomination), who vividly portray unhappy, self-absorbed siblings that have grown apart but must join forces to deal with a cantankerous, dying father (Philip Bosco) slipping into dementia.
