Based on the popular series of Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser, this 1985 adaptation recounts the comical adventures of braggart, bully, coward, thief, womanizer, and all-around scoundrel Captain Harry Flashman (Malcolm McDowell). Here he finds a shortcut to high society when Otto von Bismarck (Oliver Reed) persuades him to impersonate a Prussian prince and marry the gorgeous Duchess Irma (Britt Ekland) so that Bismarck can gain political control of the duchess's province. But when the scheme goes awry, Flashman finds himself escaping via the European wars, in which his cowardliness is mistaken for military bravery.
