Description

|
Elia Kazan won the International Award at the Venice Film Festival for directing this action film noir from 1950, and Edward and Edna Anhalt took home an Oscar for their suspenseful screenplay. After a bullet-ridden corpse turns up in the water off the New Orleans docks, a public health worker (Richard Widmark) discovers it carries a virulent strain of bubonic plague. Hundreds of officers are mobilized to track down the killers and all who had contact with the dead man in a race against time before the highly contagious disease spreads beyond the port area and infects the entire country. The killers are played with villainous brio by Jack Palance and Zero Mostel (who a few years later would be ratted out by Kazan to the House Un-American Activities Committee).
