This landmark 1928 film, the first sound western, was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Based on the O. Henry short story "The Caballeros' Way," it features an Oscar-winning performance by Warner Baxter as a villainous Cisco Kid. One of Hollywood's longest-running western characters, subsequent Ciscos (Cesar Romero, Duncan Renaldo, Gilbert Roland)—rewritten to be heroic—would ride into the sunset in more than two dozen films. In this early version, Cisco, after falling for an enchanting frontier beauty, takes a break from banditry, to duel with a lawman to win her heart. But when she betrays him, the "Robin Hood of the Old West" must use his craftiness to avoid capture.
