Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize–winning examination of the life of black Southern females in the 1930s is vividly brought to life in this cinematic adaptation. The 1985 film won the National Board of Review's Best Picture Award, garnered 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and earned Steven Spielberg Best Director honors from the Director's Guild. Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, in their film debuts, each received Oscar nominations, as did costar Margaret Avery. Goldberg also received a Golden Globe for her performance as the adult Celie who, as a 14-year-old girl, searches for fulfillment in a world that is closed to her.
