Putumayo’s motto is “world music guaranteed to make you feel good,” and the ebullient, Satchmo-influenced music of this native son of New Orleans is right on the money. Pulled from seven previous albums on the Justice and Basin Street labels (some out of print), this 11-track sampler combines traditional tunes such as “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “When My Dream Boat Comes Home,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Bye and Bye” (complete with choir) and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams” with Ruffins originals like “Leshianne,” “Kermit’s Second Line,” “Goodnight,” and “Do the Fat Tuesday” (performed live—and raucously—with his Barbecue Swingers). “Ruffins co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band, but he soon left to launch a solo career devoted to the Armstrong vocal tradition. He has served it well with his sly humor, contagious hedonism and bluesy phrasing…. He fills songs such as ‘Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams’ and ‘Ain't Misbehavin'’’ with so much personality that you can almost forget that they’d ever been recorded before. And he puts his own distinctive stamp on the Armstrong heritage by adding the flavor of a Mardi Gras brass band parade.”—Washington Post
