After a chance encounter on a train, English teacher William Bradshaw begins a close friendship with the mildly sinister Arthur Norris. Norris is a man of contradictions, lavish but heavily in debt, excessively polite but sexually deviant, who throughout the novel is pursued by his nemesis Schmidt. First published in 1933, the book piquantly evokes the atmosphere of Berlin during the rise of the Nazis, and has often been published in an omnibus with Goodbye to Berlin as The Berlin Stories. Born in Cheshire in 1904, Christopher Isherwood began writing in 1928 and left England to live openly as a gay man in the demimonde of Weimar Berlin, where he was inspired to create some of his most famous fiction—stories that would later become wildly popular in the Broadway play I Am a Camera and the musical Cabaret.
