In his second novel, from 1923, Aldous Huxley wickedly satirizes the self-absorbed ennui of London's intellectuals after the Great War. It begins with middle-aged teacher Theodore Gumbril, who hits upon the notion of inventing a type of pneumatic trouser to ease the discomforts of travelers and theatergoers, and retires to seek his fortune in the metropolis. Once there, however, his ambition begins to dissolve amid the aimless hedonism of London's aesthetic elite. Largely plotless, Antic Hay is a novel of ideas and characters, in which Huxley portrays the desultory futilitarians of a neurotic decade.
