Description
|
|
|
|
An aging ranch owner Wil Anderson (Wayne), desperate for ranch-hands to herd 1500 head of cattle across 400 miles of dangerous territory, reluctantly hires 11 greenhorn schoolboys (including Robert Carradine in his screen debut), and a worldly-wise cook named Jebediah Nightlinger (Roscoe Lee Browne)—the first black man the boys have ever seen. The 1972 film is bolstered by a brief appearance by Colleen Dewhurst as a frontier madam, veteran cinematographer Bruce Surtees' location work in Colorado and Mexico, a Coplandesque score by John Williams, and one of Bruce Dern's most memorable villains, Long Hair, leader of the rustlers.
