Description
The slightly off-kilter approach that makes the songs of this Russian-American musician so piquant pervades her new release (e.g., "Oh, Marcello" blends the refrain from the Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" into an inventive, pseudo-classical format). Along with her "trademark vocal curlicues and contagious piano melodies" (NPR), honest sentiment abounds in superb songs like "Small Town Moon," "Firewood," "Patron Saint," "All the Rowboats," and a version of the Nina Simone classic "Don't Leave Me (Ne me quitte pas)."

"A signal achievement, a set of beguiling originals abounding with hooks, humanity and endearing quirks…. Spektor's fetching eccentricities aside, there's at least a handful of radio-ready singles here…. 'The Party' is just what it says, and then some. 'May I propose a little toast for all of the ones who hurt the most / For all the friends that we have lost,' Spektor urges over a stately brass arrangement. Rich in empathy, her sentiment is anything but cheap, despite the vantage point invoked in her album's title."—Washington Post

"From the opening moment … Spektor enchants. On the first song, 'Small Town Moon,' her beautiful vocal range is buoyed by rock-heavy interludes and coupled with uplifting lyrics that give the song a surprising amount of depth…. 'Firewood' is a piano-based, love-soaked ballad where Regina really shows her strength, pulling at the heartstrings."—Sian Watson, Associated Press
