Two jazz masters—trombonist Slide Hampton and saxophonist Jimmy Heath—join Baltimore, Maryland's Whit Williams on Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas," Thelonious Monk's "Little Rootie Tootie," and Whitman's own "The Radiator Man Is Well." Written in memory of vibraphonist James Wells, this ballad offers a high point in Hampton's solo. "Although Williams names his big band (17 pieces including four trumpets, four trombones and six saxophones, plus rhythm section) after the Charlie Parker standard, his musical approach is closer to the traditional swing of Ellington and Basie…. Heath's familiar tenor takes the lead right at the start of 'This Is What It Is' … and he is especially expressive on his ballad 'Losing Game.'… Tenorist Gary Thomas plays an excellent flute solo on Hampton's 'A Day in Copenhagen' … [and] Williams' free-jazz-influenced 'Get Home Before Dark,' helps bring the musical style into the '60s."—All About Jazz
