In a career spanning six decades, New York art dealer Pierre Matisse—the son of Henri Matisse—contributed substantially to the advancement of modern art. At his eponymous gallery on East 57th Street he displayed the work of several now-legendary artists for the first time outside Europe. His extraordinary collection, including paintings, sculpture, and drawings by Balthus, Bonnard, Chagall, Derain, Dubuffet, Giacometti, and Magritte, among others, was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004. Reproduced in 109 color plates here are such works as André Masson's Lyrical Wreck, Joan Miró's bronze Moonbird, and Henri Matisse's gouache Dance: Study for the Barnes Mural (Second Version).
