Nearly a century ago in Boston, a small, esoteric book about tea was written with the intention of being read aloud in the salon of Isabella Gardner. Okakura Kakuzo—the Japanese philosopher and art curator later known as Tenshin—had a genius for bridging Western and Eastern cultures. The Book of Tea introduced the West to the "cult of tea" and has been in print continuously ever since. This set includes Okakura's book in a laminated hard cover edition, with step-by-step instructions for creating a "thin tea" ceremony; a traditional tea bowl; a split bamboo whisk for preparing matcha, the powdered green tea used in the ceremony; a fukusa silk cloth; and incense with a holder.
