Though engineers, architects, and even landscape designers had staked out fields of operation for themselves in the 17th century, such professions were in flux well into the 18th century; the same man might still operate in all these fields. But by the middle of that century professional boundaries were becoming clearer. Illustrated with 229 images—many of them technical drawings—this book looks at the career of Jean Rondelet, who came to work for architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot in 1770. Rondelet ended up assuming control of the structural aspects and the building site for the ambitious church Sainte-Geneviève, now known as the Panthéon in Paris, after faults threatened the collapse of the dome.
