The text of Bernstein's 1965 Chichester Psalms is in Hebrew, and its score contains colorful word painting and vivid orchestration. The second movement is a lyrical setting of Psalm 23 for boys' choir and soloist, interrupted by fierce outbursts from the men's choir singing 'Why do the nations rage?' from Psalm 2. The mood yields to one of comfort for the setting of Psalm 131, and the work ends quietly with a unison Amen with a solo trumpet. Barber made this disc's arrangement of his exquisite Adagio in 1967 as a setting of the Agnus Dei, and Copland wrote his 1921 Four Motets while studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, commenting in his autobiography that they were influenced by Mussorgsky. "An imaginative and enterprising programme, extremely well sung and recorded."—Gramophone
