This 1849 opera almost cost Verdi his freedom, but it ended up costing the company it was written for the services of the great composer forever. Fed up with nonpayment from the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, he decided to chuck it and leave; when they detained him, he threatened to take refuge on a French ship and sail home from there unless his fee was forthcoming. Verdi's 15th opera, Luisa Miller comes toward the end of his early period and has a strong libretto based on a play by Schiller. This 1974 production was recorded live in Vienna.
