Although she sang many major roles at opera houses and festivals, Gre Brouwenstijn (1915-99) is too little known because of her scant number of studio recordings. Bruno Walter hired her to sing Leonora in a complete recording of Fidelio, but he died before the sessions began and the project was abandoned—making this 1959 recording from Glyndebourne special indeed. "An artist beloved by millions but elusive on recordings…. What always got to me about Brouwenstijn was her combination of scrupulous musicianship and intensity of feeling. Every note this woman sang was electric; she never coasted; she was always on top of her game and, so it seemed, always in good voice."—Fanfare
