|
Halle Berry won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a soon-to-be-widowed wife of a death row inmate (Sean Combs, in his acting debut), in this powerful film from 2001 that also earned an Oscar nomination for its raw, unflinching script. Billy Bob Thornton costars as an embittered racist prison guard who helps execute her husband. After the execution, a pair of subsequent tragedies bring the emotionally drained characters together in an unlikely relationship that provides both with momentary solace and perhaps hope. The film's title refers to the party thrown following a prison guard's first execution.
