Oliver Stone's authentic re-creation of the late 1960s/early 1970s rock music scene and Val Kilmer's uncanny portrayal of the enigmatic poet and rock star Jim Morrison keep this 1991 music bio consistently compelling, from the band's meteoric rise from its Venice Beach roots to Morrison's untimely death in Paris. Equally well cast are Meg Ryan, as Morrison's girlfriend Pamela Courson, and Kyle MacLachlan, as Morrison's chief musical collaborator Ray Manzarek. This two-disc Special Edition includes commentary from Stone, interviews with the actors, 43 minutes of additional scenes, and featurettes about the band's early days in LA and Morrison and Courson's fatal sojourn in Paris.
