Frank Lloyd Wright's wife Olgivanna is famously quoted as saying that "My husband seemed to thrive on hardships." From 1920 to 1932 Wright's fortunes were at a low ebb; he was plagued by financial, personal, and professional setbacks and was often unable to find patrons, yet his imagination led to visionary designs that laid the groundwork for the more revolutionary architecture he would build later. During this period he designed almost 50 projects, of which only a few were realized, but those few are seen today as among his most important creations, including the majestic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, four exquisite textured concrete block houses in Los Angeles, the Octillo Desert Camp in Arizona, and his work as design consultant for the Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Cottages in Phoenix. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, a Taliesin Fellow and director of the archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, presents drawings and discussions of these and dozens of other fascinating projects from this highly creative period—many of them published here for the first time—as well as abundant quotes from Wright's correspondence.
