More than a travelogue or photojournalist study of modern China, the color and black and white images in this album are complete—if at times enigmatic—stories in themselves. Belgian fashion and documentary photographer Fabien Raes (the son of artist Emile Raes) began his own career as a painter, and each of the images here is a composition in which many layers of meaning can be read, from a rusting motorized rickshaw in a forgotten lane to a girl in a bright red dress walking between fluttering Chinese flags of the same color.
