This 1968 amalgam of Western and horror film, was the last of seven collaborations between producer (and later director) Alan J. Pakula and director Richard Mulligan, whose partnership peaked with To Kill a Mockingbird. Gregory Peck stars as a veteran Army scout who agrees to escort a former Apache captive (Eva Marie Saint) and her half-Indian son across the sprawling desert wastelands of the Arizona Territory to safe haven in New Mexico—all the while pursued by a cunning and cruel Apache who is the boy's father. True to horror film conventions, the antagonist is only glimpsed obliquely and not fully revealed until the movie's climax.
