|
New Zealand–born director Andrew Dominik unspools the final days of Jesse James with gritty realism and the arc of a Shakespearean tragedy in this critically acclaimed film from 2007. Brad Pitt won Best Actor honors at the Venice Film Festival for his portrayal of James, and Casey Affleck notched an Academy Award nomination as the Judas-like Ford, but the bulk of the film's accolades, including an Oscar nomination, went to master cinematographer Roger Deakins, who re-creates the bleakness and austerity of the frontier as few films have. An all-star cast populates James' gang, and political pundit James Carville is surprisingly effective in his role as the governor of Missouri.
