Dubbed "The Sound" for the warmth of his tone and phrasing, Stan Getz rose to renown in the late 1940s, going "viral" in 1964 with his musical championing of the bossa nova in "The Girl From Ipanema." Getz also made several avant-garde fusion recordings for Columbia, beginning with Captain Marvel in 1972 with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Tony Williams. Besides The Master, The Best of Two Worlds with guitarist/singer João Gilberto, and The Peacocks with pianist Jimmy Rowles (all from 1975), this collection includes Another World, Children of the World, Forest Eyes (music composed, arranged & conducted by Jurre Haanstra), and a bonus disc with selections from Woody Herman Memorial: The 40th Anniversary Carnegie Hall Concertt, Montreux Summit, and Havana Jam. "Cool and caressing, warm and limpid, breathy and voluptuous, it's certainly a sound worth celebrating…. The problem with dwelling on The Sound is that it leads too many people to think all Getz had to do was pick up his instrument and play pretty to be who he was. He played pretty, all right, on ballads and uptempo tunes alike. Few musicians are able to cast more meaning over a simple melody than he could. But as a bountiful board of posthumous recent recordings and reissues reveal, that was only one of the eggs in his basket. Getz was an improviser of hard-swinging, penetrating brilliance and headstrong logic. Under a cloak of accessibility, he created worlds of emotion and revelation of the sort that may never be heard again."—Chicago Sun-Times
