While working with Miles Davis's group in the 1950s, John Coltrane began recording on his own time, as a leader. Culled from Trane's Prestige albums, these essential recordings include "Soultrane," "Lover, Come Back to Me," "Nutty," "I Hear a Rhapsody," "Traneing In," "Freight Train," "Bahia," "I Love You," "Good Bait," and "Theme for Ernie." "In his insightful essay on Trane in The Jazz Tradition, Martin Williams shrewdly suggests that he owed a lot to Coleman Hawkins and Don Byas. Separated by a generation, that pair shared two concerns that shaped Trane: They favored vertical arpeggios over linear melodies and they depended on heavy, regularly accented beats. The first led Trane to what Ira Gitler dubbed 'sheets of sound,' where he raced faster and faster and faster, pile-driving notes into each other to suggest stacked harmonies. The second meant his sense of rhythm was almost as close to rock as to bop."—Gene Santoro, The Nation
