Description
The wattage of the show-stopping talent here would light up Times Square, but a few highlights will suffice to rope in Sondheim lovers and perhaps ensnare a few novices as well. Filmed in 1992 for PBS's Great Performances, the inimitable Madeline Kahn does a tour-de-force turn in the breakneck "Getting Married Today"; Liza with a Z exploits both legs and voice to perfection in "Back in Business"; Jerry Hadley sings the most exquisitely beautiful rendition of "Joanna" in existence; and Dorothy Loudon pulls heartstrings with a medley of "Losing My Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy." Enough said? No? See below!

"The show begins with Sondheim specialist Paul Gemignani conducting a large orchestra in a thrilling reading of 'The Ballad of Sweeney Todd' and a gorgeous mini-medley of 'Johanna' and 'Pretty Women' sung by tenor Jerry Hadley and the twin baritones Eugene and Herbert Perry…. Young Daisy Eagan is adorable in 'Broadway Baby'; Patti LuPone stops the show with a passionate rendition of 'Being Alive'; and Bernadette Peters emotes compellingly in 'Not a Day Goes By,' which would become something of a signature Sondheim song for her. 'A Weekend in the Country' features the company of Ellis and Stroman's New York City Opera production of A Little Night Music."—The Sondheim Review
